Connecting your TV Recorder to the Internet

To manage your TV Recorder at home remotely using IceTV's Interactive features online or via your mobile, you will need to connect your TV Recorder to your home network, so it can access the internet.

There are basically 3 'networking' options to choose from: Wireless (Wi-Fi), Ethernet over power (EoP) and Ethernet (wired). The networking options that are available to you will depend on what your TV Recorder supports (i.e. what connections it has) and how your existing home network is set up. We offer a selection of networking devices to help you connect your TV Recorder to your home network via our online store.

Wireless (Wi-Fi)

Wireless networking (aka Wi-Fi) allows you to connect your TV Recorder and other devices in your home to the internet without any messy cables. This means you can keep your ADSL or cable modem where you'd like it (i.e. in the study), while giving your PVR access to the internet and to IceTV's electronic program guide (EPG) and Interactive features.

Not all PVRs can be wirelessly networked, but a lot can. To see a selection of those PVRs that come with wireless networking capabilities, please visit our online store. Most Mac solutions and Media Center PCs come with wireless networking capabilities built in.

Pros

• Easy to set up
• Fairly cheap
• No messy cables
• Once you have Wi-Fi, all Wi-Fi enabled devices can use it

Cons

• Range of about 30-70 metres indoors

Ethernet over power (EoP)

Ethernet over power is a relatively new method being used by users to connect two or more devices using their existing home electricity. With an Ethernet over power adaptor, all you need to do is plug one of the adaptors into a powerpoint near your PVR and another near your ADSL or cable modem and you're set! There's no need to run messy Ethernet cables throughout the house or pay for expensive installations.

Ethernet over power is quicker than the Wi-Fi adaptors found on almost all PVRs, so it's a great choice if you plan to stream video around the house. It's one of the easiest and quickest ways to get the internet from your study to your living room.

All the TV Recorders that support IceTV now come with a built-in Ethernet connection, so they can be used with an Ethernet over power solution, when your ADSL or cable modem is situated elsewhere in your home.

We offer a small selection of Ethernet over power adaptors via our online store.

Pros

• Easy to set up
• Fairly cheap
• No messy cables
• Quick transfer speeds, allowing streaming of high def TV

Cons

• Basic adaptors only connect one device. If you have multiple devices, you need more than one adaptor or a more expensive solution with multiple ports.

Ethernet (wired)

Ethernet is probably the simplest, yet most difficult solution to get your TV Recorder connected to the internet into your living room. Simple because it only requires a single, cheap cable to be plugged in from your PVR to your ADSL or cable modem, but difficult because most of us do not have our ADSL or cable modem situated near our TV and would rather not have a cable running though the house.

The proper solution is usually to run Ethernet cables through your roof and walls, but this can be very expensive and require a lot of effort, especially if you have an older house. There are however, more and more reasons these days to have an Ethernet connection near your TV.

Ethernet does also provide the quickest solution in terms of data transfer speeds, so it's a great choice if you plan to stream video around the house or transfer files. All the TV Recorders that support IceTV now come with a built-in Ethernet connection.

Pros

• Easy to set up
• Very reliable and secure
• Quick transfer speeds, allowing streaming of high def TV

Cons

• Cheap to run a cable through the house, very expensive to install properly
