MOVIE: Something Like Happiness (2005)

As part of SBS TWO's European Session we present this film about three childhood friends, now in their young adulthood, try to crystallise their role in life while they struggle to cope with parental pressure on one hand and depressing physical and social conditions on the other. In a mid-sized Czech town, influenced by the presence of heavy industry, Monika, Tonik and Dasa, live bound by adult complexities in the desultory block of flats in which they grew up. Monika, having said goodbye to her US-bound boyfriend Jiri, is desperately waiting for the call to join him while she endures the emotional tug of war between her parents. Tonik escapes his conservative parents to go and live with his eccentric aunt on a ramshackle farm while he carries a torch for Monika. And Dasa, an unmarried mother of two is involved with a married man. Her precarious situation is taking a toll on her mental stability. Directed by Bohdan Slama.
